DESCRIPTION

The Summer Journalism Academy at Boston University gives high school students the opportunity to expand their skills and prepare for college, either through a residential experience on campus or through remote instruction from home.

Each academy instructor is also a working journalist, so what’s taught is grounded in real-life experience. Each lesson is tied to its practical application, by giving students actual reporting assignments. Each day is a sample of life as a news reporter.

Description of On Campus Experience: Three weeks designed for students with journalism experience. Students will participate in classes, gain hands-on experience, and attend guest talks. ONLY STUDENTS IN 10TH AND 11TH GRADE ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY.

Description of Learn-from-Home Option: Two weeks of instruction and hands-on reporting. Previous experience in journalism is useful but not required. Students will participate in classes that will strengthen skills, research, write, and edit with the help of heir instructor. In certain occasions, they will also attend guest talks. THE PROGRAM IS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS IN THE 9TH, THE 10TH, AND THE 11TH GRADE. Below you can find an example of what the schedule will look like: 
 

• 12:30 pm Eastern / 9:30 am Pacific: Classroom: Instruction and activity focused on one skill.
• 1:30 pm / 10:30 am: Break
• 2 pm / 11 am: Newsroom: Story discussion and planning, followed by offline time for interviews, research and writing, as well as editing online with your in instructor.
• 5 pm / 2 pm: Guest Talks, when scheduled.

Photojournalism Track: Boston University’s Summer Journalism Academy introduces a specialty track for high school students focused on photojournalism. It’s a unique opportunity for on-campus and learn-from-home students working to strengthen their photography skillset. Whether they work for the school newspaper or yearbook, or want to learn how to create powerful images from a professional photojournalist. The photojournalism track is limited to 12 students per session.
