Michigan Math and Science Scholars
PROGRAM SPECIFICS
DESCRIPTION
Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS) home page is a summer enrichment program designed to introduce high school students to current developments and research in the sciences and to encourage the next generation of researchers to develop and retain a love of mathematics and science.
The MMSS program is a stepping stone for today’s high school student to become tomorrow’s university student. Students are able to use the first-class labs, classrooms and technology at the University of Michigan while learning from their faculty, graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Students are given the opportunity to learn about exciting research in math and science with real-time information!
Students will spend time in research and computer laboratories, as well as doing field work with their professors. They will catch a glimpse of the amazing career possibilities in math and science that are open to anyone with a thirst to learn. Like sponges, students will absorb critical information to help them select a career in the sciences.
STUDENT COMMENTS
"Both the program and the university inspire a sense of professionalism but also simultaneously make the students feel very comfortable. The environment of the program was also one of multiculturalism with highly motivates and interesting people."
“The MMSS is a very competitive and challenging program that is primarily based on science and math courses. However, I myself took a course in human anatomy and the dissection of life. Either way the program was absolutely amazing. We got to dissect a number of different animals, such as fish, minks, rats, frogs, pigs etc. We also learned every single bone of the body as well as all of the muscles and organs. We wrote dissection journals, took four practicals and created a presentation based on the research that each group did on the animal that they dissected explaining how their animal died!”
“Some things that could have been different include the fact that there were multiple other camps going on at the same time as ours, which made it really crowded, especially in the cafeteria. Furthermore I have to include the amount of work that we had as a negative. But this has to do only with my course: human anatomy and dissection of life. We were the only class that had homework after six hours of class. Also, it was mandatory for students to be in groups of three whenever we wanted to go explore or go shopping or anything else (always inside the boundaries). I completely understand why we had to be in groups, we all just thought that three people was a lot and that with two we would be fine, but it wasn’t much of a problem.
Other than these minor issues there really wasn’t anything else I would change. The camp was an incredible experience and we were all extremely sad to have to leave after only two weeks. There were so many great aspects of the program and those include all the activities that we had after class (which the students of my course weren’t really able to participate in many because of the amount of work). There were movies, sports, art fairs, etc. in which we could take part in. On the weekend we went to Cedar Point amusement park and a baseball game. The best part was that we had university professors as our course teachers, which was as scary as it was incredibly helpful.”
"Michigan Math and Science Scholars" was an amazing experience. Although the program's duration was only 2 weeks the overall benefit from enrolling in the course was massive. Students sharing different social backgrounds were working together, conducting research (both in class and in other hands-on activities) in their fascinating and competitive courses. Although classes were a bit challenging, there was plenty of space for personal growth and time for interacting and fun activities. It is a wonderful opportunity to do something your area of interest and get familiarized with college life and life in the States in general.
